Since India doesn’t require homeschoolers to register with any single system, families are free to choose — but that freedom can feel overwhelming. NIOS: The most direct path for Indian credentials
The National Institute of Open Schooling is a government body designed specifically for students who aren’t in a traditional classroom. It’s widely considered the most homeschool-friendly option in India because it doesn’t require years of prior school attendance to sit for exams.
NIOS is usually the strongest choice if your child is aiming for Indian competitive exams like JEE or NEET, or plans to attend an Indian university.
CBSE: Familiar, but harder to access without a school
CBSE is the board most Indian parents already know. The challenge for homeschoolers is that CBSE generally requires affiliation with a recognized school to sit for board exams. Some families use CBSE-aligned curriculum materials for day-to-day learning even while planning to certify through NIOS later.
IGCSE: Built for global flexibility
A strong option for families who want international mobility — either because you may relocate, or because your child may pursue university abroad. The trade-off is cost and access: IGCSE exams and materials are usually more expensive.
