IGCSE comes up a lot in homeschooling circles as the “international” option, but it’s worth understanding what it actually involves before committing — the cost and logistics look quite different from NIOS or a state board.
What IGCSE actually is
IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a Cambridge-administered qualification, taken by students worldwide around the class 10 level, with A-Levels typically following for class 11-12. Unlike NIOS, a homeschooled student can’t simply register as an individual — exams must be taken at an authorised Cambridge exam centre.
The real cost picture
- Exam entry fees — charged per subject, and generally higher than NIOS’s per-subject fees
- Registered centre fees — private candidates typically pay an additional fee to sit exams through a centre they aren’t enrolled with
- Materials and tutoring — official Cambridge textbooks and subject tutors add up, especially for sciences

Who it actually suits
IGCSE makes the most sense for families with a fairly clear goal already in mind — studying abroad, applying to an international curriculum school later, or targeting universities that are especially familiar with Cambridge qualifications. For families without that specific goal, NIOS offers equal recognition within India at a fraction of the cost and effort.
Finding an exam centre
This is often the biggest logistical hurdle — authorised centres are concentrated in larger metros, so families outside major cities may need to travel for exams. It’s worth confirming centre availability near you before building a multi-year plan around this board.
